CARL-Portage is hiring a Project Officer!

Launched in 2015 by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Portage Network (Portage) collaborates with stakeholders from across the research ecosystem to develop and coordinate expertise, platforms, services, and technology in support of research data management, aimed to facilitate the adoption of data stewardship best practices by researchers and institutions.

The Project Officer that CARL seeks is a dynamic, library professional who has strong communication and project management skills and is eager to work on a pan-Canadian basis. The ideal candidate will bring prior experience or a demonstrated interest in academic library issues such as research data management.

The Project Officer will be a member of the CARL Portage Secretariat, reporting to the Portage Director. The position will provide communications, research, documentation, coordination, and overall project management support; and will also provide operational and secretariat support to one or more of its strategic committees. Project areas may include research data management, sensitive data, research support, and data management planning (DMP). Engagement with several projects at the same time, and with new projects arising over time, is anticipated.

The employment period will be February 1, 2020 – September 30, 2020 (8-months). Note: A secondment or academic leave of a qualified individual from a CARL member institution or other Canadian academic library would be considered.


    • Support the development and execution of project plans in collaboration with the Portage Director and specific project lead(s);
    • Provide project coordination, communications, research, documentation, and meeting support;
    • Support the on-time, on-budget delivery of planned deliverables and outcomes and track expenditures of funds;
    • Liaise with Chairs and members, leading or contributing on projects, finalizing reports and publications, producing related website content and other documentation, organizing events and managing logistics;
    • Contribute to the operations of the CARL Portage Secretariat, participating in regular or special tasks as requested by the Portage Director, including web content development, social media, and production of communications and information products;
    • Support the strategic development of CARL Portage by maintaining an awareness of current trends in the Canadian RDM landscape.


    • Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program;
    • Ability to interact with association members, project participants, co-workers, staff of other organizations or government with courtesy, discretion and tact.
    • Experience undertaking research, analysis, and writing (e.g., reports) in an employment setting;
    • Highly developed oral and written communication skills, particularly the ability to explain complex concepts to a wide variety of users in either English or French;
    • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with an attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines;
    • Excellent organizational, time management, collaborative and problem-solving skills;
    • Ability to follow direction and to exercise responsible independent action;
    • Proficiency with standard office software applications;


Candidates with the following qualifications may be preferred. These should be explicitly described in the applicant’s cover letter:

    • Professional experience in an academic, special, or research library, or equivalent relevant experience is highly desirable;
    • Education, training or experience in any of the following: data management, communications, project management;
    • Familiarity with technologies supporting CARL Portage’s web and social media presence;
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in both French and English.


    • The position location is flexible as work may be performed remotely with frequent teleconferencing.
    • Work week: 35 hours, Monday to Friday within normal business hours, with some flexibility.
    • Occasional travel for meetings or conferences.
    • Overtime may be required from time to time.
    • Position start date: February 1, 2020
    • Position end date: September 30, 2020


Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
This position is not eligible for benefits.
